Gutters and downpipes
Gutters After a Storm
A gutter hanging off after the wind looks minor. An overflowing gutter soaking the wall all winter is how damp gets into a house. Brackets, joints and downpipes are usually fixed in the same visit as the roof.

Pulled, blocked, cracked
- Pulled away: wind or the weight of water and leaves snaps brackets or pulls the fascia screws.
- Blocked: leaves, moss off the roof and broken slate fragments block the outlet, and the gutter overflows over the front.
- Joints leaking: the seals between lengths dry out and drip onto the wall.
- Downpipes knocked off their brackets or disconnected at the gully.
Water down the wall is damp inside
Water pouring over a gutter runs down the wall, soaks the render or brick and shows as damp inside, often mistaken for a roof leak. Insurers' own advice before a storm is to clear gutters and check drains aren't blocked with leaves, and displaced gutters and downpipes are a typical minor storm claim.
Water coming in? Do this first
- Stay safe. Don't go on the roof or up a ladder in wind or rain. Keep clear of anything hanging loose.
- Catch the water. Buckets under drips, move what you can, and switch off lights or sockets near the wet.
- Take photos and video of the damage inside and out, close up and wide, once it's safe.
- Get a roofer out for a temporary repair, and keep every receipt. Insurers usually pay for temporary repairs.
- Tell your insurer as soon as you can.
